M40 Motorway Breakdown Safety Guidelines
If you break down on the M40, please follow this sequence:
- Pull as far left as possible — ideally onto the hard shoulder or into an Emergency Refuge Area (ERA).
- Switch on your hazard warning lights immediately.
- Exit via the passenger door, away from traffic, and stand behind the crash barrier.
- Do not attempt repairs on the hard shoulder — this is extremely dangerous.
- Call 07365 801219 and quote your nearest marker post (small blue signs every 100 metres).
- For smart motorway sections, use the nearest SOS phone if the lane is closed or live traffic is passing.
